mkrobinson1. Favorite Sitter.
Mary Anne Spier is my favorite member of the Baby Sitters Club upon my re-readings as an adult. When I was originally reading the series as a child Kristy Thomas was my favorite sitter, and I will always have a soft spot for her. I originally read the series starting with Baby Sitter's Little Sister, which was why I transitioned to Kristy as a favorite when I started reading the series as a kid. I related deeply to Mary Anne, which was why as a child I was not as fond of her as a character.
Rereading the books as I aged, I saw Mary Anne in a deeper light. I recognized that the characteristics we shared were not the worst things in the world to share, and I came to really like her as a character. Mary Anne's storyline in the Friends Forever series is one of the few parts I can tolerate and read again (I have decided feelings about Stacey and Claudia and their inane fight over yet another boy that stop me from wanting to consider the Friends Forever series canon), Mary Anne seemed like a good friend, and I really enjoyed her friendships with Dawn and Kristy. I really wish that they had not flanderized Dawn to the extent that they did soon after their parents got married because I think that exploring their bond as step-sisters and best friends would have been better written by Ann and would have been done a kindness to not be victim to the ghostwriters and their abilities to make everyone one-note at times. I also enjoy Mary Anne's bond with her father, Richard. I liked how their relationship grew and matured as Mary Anne matured herself, and I enjoyed the hints that we got of her past with Richard in her chapter in the Babysitters Remember and in Mary Anne's Book.
