The Problematic Relationship Between Alice and Hal: a concept


IT IS NOT ROMANTIC WHEN THE MAN THAT SENDS YOU TO A CONVENT TO HAVE YOUR CHILD BECAUSE YOU WONT HAVE AN ABORTION THEN MARRIES YOU AT THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN WHILE YOU ARE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. 

HAL IS A CONTROLLING ASSHOLE AND HIS BEHAVIORS IN HIS MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIP TO ALICE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A FORM OF ABUSE INDEPENDENT OF HIS TENDENCY TO MURDER.

Does...does the show treat this as romantic??

I mean, it also seems to look upon Archie/fake!Grundy with fond eyes so I shouldn't be TOO surprised, but...

No, the show completely brushed over the fact that Alice (she with a child that would have been 25 were he still alive) informed Betty that "in 25 years of marriage, I never(...), which is irritating but whatever. In my mind it explains a great deal of why we have Alice The Hot Mess, because of course she is going to be a wreck when she went from a bad home life to Sister of Quiet Mercy to giving up the baby she wanted to BOOM marrying Hal.

Unfortunately the Hal Cooper stans on tumblr were twittering about how 'romantic' this was and I saw literal red. It's like canonical that Hal and Alice were not in love and that the high school sweethearts act was an act.

Hal...Cooper...stans...okay, I haven't seen the show since the first season but isn't he, like, a serial killer?

Which, it's fine to like a villain as a vllain of course, but not to the point of uwu the serial killer is romantic.

Yes, it's amazing, isn't it? They think that he and Alice have this healthy fulfilling relationship and it's like...even if we discount the fact that he tries to KILL HER AND BETTY IN SEASON TWO it is definitely toxic and at the very least borderline abusive. I would go so far as to say that it is clearly abusive but accept that opinions vary.

Alice has been led astray this season so they are using the fact that Hal has manipulated Betty into seeing him again as wonderful signs that he is a good father and Alice is the worst person ever bc she shockingly has no coping skills.

And, no, Archie/Fake Grundy was never properly dealt with.
